Rose and Greg wanted to make their 2nd floor master bedroom Aging in Place accessible, but the stairs couldn’t be overcome without an elevator. Instead they hired Susan Harthun Designs to create a master bedroom that looks like it was always a part of the original house. The plan included 600 square foot adjoining the garage and the family room. Susan designed the addition’s roof ridge line to line up with the existing roofline.  A high roofline allowed us to vault ceilings.  We modified the design to include an additional entry to the master suite from the garage with contingencies for future accessible ramp.

The addition included a new Aging in Place accessible master bathroom with an accessible no-curb walk in tile shower, a jetted tub, grab bars, a large skylight and two large windows to give the room plenty of outdoor light.

In the bedroom we installed a new Andersen patio door that opens onto the deck. The project included radiant floor heating under the bedroom hardwood and bathroom tile with digital temperature control. To create a cozy bedroom atmosphere, we installed a small natural gas stove.  For cooling, we installed a high efficiency mini split air conditioning unit. To keep the heat in, we air sealed the addition and installed insulation in the walls, floors and attic.

We custom built a cherry window seat to match the detailing of the Amish furniture.  Over the window seat we installed a bay window with two side casement windows. To match the bathroom, we installed Ceasarestone window sills for continuity. The walk-in closet includes custom shelving to access the entertainment center wires.

Their living room was a nice but uninviting area, so in order to make the room more comfortable, we upgraded to new insulated windows in the dining and living room area.  We added a new gas fireplace with a custom fir mantle, tile surround and recessed lighting. Another window was added to the room to increase daylight.
