When John and Bea moved to Corvallis, we helped them find a property and build their dream home. The Earth Advantage Institute awarded the house their highest designation, the Platinum award, for its sustainable building features.
The lot’s existing home was dilapidated, but it had a distinctive curved foundation. We removed the deteriorated wood framing, but saved portions of the foundation. After pouring new curved walls using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF blocks), we built the two-story 3,900 square foot super-insulated home with south-facing passive solar windows, a sunroom, and glulam columns supporting the roof. The unique design incorporates solar-tube lighting on the lower level.
The 3 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom home includes some dramatic architectural features: a graceful curved concrete interior stairway, floors crafted from locally-milled madrone hardwood and concrete tinted with a soy-based stain, a custom-colored American Clay (plaster) accent wall, a custom cedar sauna, a high-efficiency wood stove with soapstone accent, custom handrails, spectacular tile bathrooms, and a spacious kitchen with recycled Eco quartz countertops and commercial-grade appliances. For the canines members of the family, there’s a tile dog washing shower and a dog doorbell.
We built this custom home for a couple that had been a previous client. The 4,232 square foot home has 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a daylight basement, and a composite lumber deck that takes advantage of the beautiful view of the city .
For energy efficiency, we installed a high efficiency furnace and extra insulation, including three inches of rigid insulation beneath the basement’s concrete floor that makes it feel warm underfoot. In planning the project, we accommodated the owners’ desire to do some of the finish work themselves. We completed the exterior of the home and most of the interior trim. The owners then seamlessly provided the finishing touches.

This custom home was built in 2006 in the northwest part of Corvallis. We designed and built a home with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and 2945 square feet on 3 levels. The subdivision where this home is located mandated the use of railings and concrete entry staircase as seen in the front of the picture. One of the owners has mobility challenges with stairs so we designed the house around a residential elevator from the garage floor to the 3rd floor. Each floor has access to the elevator. An elevated walkway ties the stairs, elevator, and bedrooms together on the third floor.
To save energy and reduce the house’s carbon footprint we installed a ground loop heat pump system (which uses a buried refrigerant coil to pick up and release heat from the earth). The walls were packed with blown in dense cellulose insulation. Raised heel trusses were used over the exterior walls which provides for greater attic insulation. A solar photovoltaic system was installed on the south slope of the house to generate electrical power. The combination of interior vaulted spaces and an open floor plan provides for a very dramatic and comfortable home for the owners.
This home was built in 1993 as a custom home for a client of ours. The original home ended at the right hand side of the 2 car garage. The home changed hands and we’ve done 2 major additions on the home for the current owners with some extensive interior and exterior remodeling (including redoing the kitchen and family room and creating a “mother-in-law” quarters in the back portion of the home). With additions the current home has 4,063 square feet of heated space with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The kitchen in this home is one of the feature photos in the kitchen section on our website. Outside the second floor master bedroom we added a waterproof deck surrounded with glass railings. Below the waterproof deck we constructed an exterior kitchen area complete with granite countertops and a built-in gas grill.

My parents asked our company build this custom, single story retirement home in 1997. The open layout my Dad designed has 2 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms in 1952 square feet. The exterior walls were super insulated and raise heeled trusses were used throughout which provide for greater insulation values. We used vaulted trusses over the great room to make the room feel larger. The master bathroom has a glass block accent window with a Jacuzzi bath. In the back yard, we built a composite deck and covered screened in porch. Because the back yard rapidly sloped away, we built retaining walls on the property line to provide for a level garden area. Good topsoil was brought in to support my Mother’s interest in flowers and gardening.
Built in 1998, this 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom home has 1872 square feet on 2 levels. The small home on the left was the original home on the lot. The owner used a wheelchair and needed a larger accessible home for his needs. Therefore, we built the larger home to the right and attached it to the existing garage. Our crews poured pavement to connect both buildings with handicap accessible ramps. The kitchen and master bedroom suite is all on the lower level of the home and was built to be wheelchair accessible. Custom kitchen cabinets allowed the owner to do his own cooking and entertaining. This home was built in 1990; it has 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms with 1944 square feet on 2 levels. It was designed by Susan Harthun of Corvallis with an open “vee shaped” floor plan. This home has an unfinished basement under the central part of the main floor. Several years after the owners moved in they had us back to finish the bonus room above the garage to create a “mother-in-law” quarters with a bathroom. The garage has doors at both the front and back so cars can be driven directly through on a loop driveway. We built a spacious deck on the south side of the home to enjoy the view of Mary’s Peak and surround hills.
This is a custom single story retirement home built in a northwest corner of Corvallis in 2002. It has 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and 2958 square feet. This was a custom build for the owners who wish to make it a single level home they could comfortably retire in. Due to the slope of the lot, we had to do some creative grading in the yard in order to make it all work. This home features vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors throughout, a large entertainment area, screened in porch and has worked out well for the owners. They recently moved one of their mothers in with them and are able to take care of her as well.
We built this rural Benton County home in 1991 for one of our neighbors. It is a custom home with 4 bedroom and 3 bathrooms in 2500 square feet. The home includes 2 stories over a daylight basement. It is located on a ridge with a beautiful view of Corvallis to the east and the Oak Creek Valley to the west. Several years after we built the home for the owners, they contacted us to come back and add the 2 car detached garage with a bonus room above the garage (visible on the right of the picture). The original owners are still living in this home.
In 2010 we were contacted to design and build a small custom home outside of Philomath. We were able to incorporate 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms into 1400 square feet. The home is built on the owner’s Christmas tree farm and was built to maximize their views. Because of the home’s rural location and lack of city fire protection, we were mandated to provide a water storage tank and fire sprinklers throughout the home. Soon after this photo was taken, the owner secured funds and contracted with us to build a 2 car garage off to the right hand side of the home. The garage is now completed.
In 1994 we built this single level custom retirement home for some of our previous clients. Their previous home was a split level and was no longer suitable for them. The owners chose stock plans to save money, however, we made some modifications at their request. The home is 2000 square feet with vaulted interiors and spectacular views out the back patio. The home has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The home changed hands in the past 4 or 5 years and we’ve done siding upgrades and interior remodeling to meet the desires of the new owners. The home is a wonderful single story accessible home, perfect for aging in place.
Originally, this was a spec home built by our company in 1997. The home has 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths in 2,095 square feet. We built this house using advanced framing techniques, blown-in insulation in the exterior walls, a high efficiency furnace and water heater. It has been owned by 2 families since we built the home. The current owner has had us perform some minor remodeling to make it her home. As you can see it is still a good solid home.
