Custom Bathrooms in John and Bea’s Home

Carl Christianson

One of the highlights of John and Bea’s new home are the custom bathrooms. The master bathroom takes advantage of new construction’s flexibility. Their architect Don Livingstone, brought the homes’ tall ceilings down to an intimate level by adding a barrel vaulted ceiling. Next we complemented the ceiling’s curves by adding a curved glass block wall with a stained concrete cap. We built a European style shower (barrier free entry) out of custom tile with glass tile accents. Our tile setter built a custom tile shower seat and installed glass tile into the inset mirror frames.

Environmentally friendly cabinetry was special ordered from Neil Kelly cabinets and topped with Eco by Cosentino recycled material countertop and with a matching window sill. A solar hot water system reduces the environmental impact of heating water.

The downstairs bathroom is exceptional because it includes a cedar sauna, two story solar tube for lighting, Eco countertop and custom radiused shower by our local tile setter. Black countertops and toilet contrast nicely with the bright red glass tiles used in the shower and in the mirror frame. The shower is complemented by a frameless “rain” glass door, which provides excellent privacy.

We installed a custom authentic Finnish Sauna by Finlandia to fit the downstairs bathroom. The sauna includes clear western red cedar walls, benches, a heater from Harvia Oy in Finland, digital controls and a vertical grain Douglas fir glass door.
